In this Phase II program, the short term rope behaviour was studied. Important observation was made to understand the long term behaviour of HMPE ropes used in tug assist application up to 1700 jobs. Phase I of this study was presented at ITS 2002. Samson Rope Technologies and DSM Dyneema undertook a 2-year long joint program combining field performance and in laboratory studies to establish a better understanding of retirement criteria of synthetic fibre ropes. High performance synthetic ropes have been successfully used in the towing industry for ship assist and vessel escort since the mid 1990's. The final two chapters review rope markets, distribution and liability and provide case studies from the many environments in which fibre rope is used. The key issues surrounding the inspection and retirement of rope are identified and rope testing is thoroughly examined. Terminations are also introduced and the many uses of rope are illustrated. Following an introduction to fibre ropes, the Handbook of fibre rope technology takes a comprehensive look at rope-making materials, rope structures, properties and mechanics and covers rope production, focusing on laid strand, braided, low-twist and parallel yarn ropes. This handbook updates the history and structural mechanics of fibre rope technology and describes the types and properties of modern rope-making materials and constructions. At the forefront of this change has been the development of synthetic fibres and modern types of rope construction. The field of fibre rope technology has witnessed incredible change and technological advance over the last few decades. It offers easy maintenance and servicing, and can be use over a longer period. The redesigned dome can be readily assembled or dissembled during and after its use.

In this paper, we present low-cost, portable and robust modifications in existing Aanderaa bottom mooring dome for tide gauge deployment. The existing pre-deployment technique involves usage of heavy chains and synthetic ropes, which is tedious and time consuming process. One of the important oceanographic instruments is tide-gauge, that measure and records tide parameters. Also, the tide generated current is commercially significant for navigation. Tides enhance the fish productivity which is of economical importance. Tidal data is useful in establishment of chart datums for demarcation of coastline for fixing offshore territorial limits, both on the sea surface and on the submerged lands of the Continental Shelf. Tides influence the mixing and stratification in sea and estuaries, which is responsible for biological activities. Tide is an important oceanographic phenomenon and has significant influence in global scale. A thorough understanding of all these phenomena is therefore essential for safe design. Bending occurs whenever ropes pass over pulleys, and can rapidly degrade high performance ropes. Torsion may also arise during handling or installation operations.

Torsion can be induced during tension loading, due to the unbalanced construction of some ropes (e.g. Tension is clearly the dominant loading in most marine applications but torsion and flexure may also be present.
